What are some new procedures that are gaining popularity?
Vaginoplasty, pectoral implants, calf implants... These are very interesting new surgical
procedures. In a report released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the hottest new
procedures of 2005 may just be new procedures gaining popularity. They are viewed as
groundbreaking procedures, but are no where near as mainstream as liposuction, breast
augmentation or even lip augmentation.
Surgeons have reported that the inquiries are not even there for many of these new procedures. It
may be due to the infrequency of hearing about calf implants or vaginoplasty's - but they are
real. Other doctors have reported not even knowing that these were being touted as the hottest
procedures of the year. They feel patients simply are not interested in them, or if they are
there may still be a social stigma to asking about them.
The interest in vaginal rejuvenation began in 2004, and in 2005 about 800 procedures were
actually preformed. Other plastic surgery procedures tracked for the first time by the ASPS
in 2005 were: buttock implants (542), calf augmentation (337) and pectoral implants (206).
These procedures do not compare when contrasted with the mainstream procedures of liposuction,
rhinoplasty, and breast augmentation. Overall more than 1.8 million surgical cosmetic procedures
were performed in 2005.
- Actual numbers for 2005:
- Liposuction - 323,605 procedures
- Rhinoplasty/ nose reshaping - 298,413 procedures
- Breast augmentation - 291,350
- Blepharoplasty/ eyelid surgery - 230,697 procedures
- Tummy tucks - 134,746 procedures
Statistics such as this have been collected since 2003. They have been collected through the
first online national database for plastic surgery procedures, Tracking Operations and
Outcomes for Plastic Surgeons (TOPS). With this data in combination with annual surveys sent
to more than 17,000 board-certified physicians and specialists that likely to perform plastic
surgery, results in the most comprehensive census on plastic surgery procedures. These also help
in developing the most up to date numbers for surgeons and doctors alike to keep track of what
their patient needs will be in the coming years.
