What are some statistics for Plastic/Cosmetic Surgery in the U.S?

  1. Women had nearly 10,500,000 of the total procedures performed in 2005 accounting for 91.4% of the total, a decline form 2004.
  2. The top five surgical procedures for women were lipoplasty, breast augmentation, blepharoplasty, abdominoplasty, and breast lifts.
  3. Men had 985,000 procedures, approximately 9% of the total, down 15% from 2004.
  4. Top five procedures for men included lipoplasty, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, male breast reduction and facelift.
  5. People between the ages of 35-50 had the most surgeries, 5.3 million, making up 47% of the total. People between the ages of 51-64 had 24% of the surgeries, and patients between 19 and 34 had 24% of the surgeries. Those over 65 years old accounted for 5% and those under 19 were about 1.5%.
  6. For the 18 and under crowd laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, otoplasty and rhinoplasty were the most common procedures.
  7. Ethnic minorities made up for about 20% of all procedures, with Hispanics making up for 9%, African Americans making up 6%, Asians about 4% and the rest made up for 1.3%.
  8. Forty - eight percent of cosmetic procedures were performed in an office facility, while 28% made up for procedures performed at surgi - centers, and 24% were done in hospitals.
  9. American spent a total of $12.4 billion on cosmetic procedures last year.

Non - Surgical Cosmetic Procedures:

  • 1997 - 1,126,177 procedures performed

Nearly 11.5 million surgical and non surgical procedures were preformed in the US. Nineteen percent of the procedures were surgical, while the remaining 81% were non-surgical, making for the total.

Since 1997 there has been an increase of 444% in the total number of cosmetic procedures. Surgical procedures have increased by 119% and non surgical procedures by 726%.

From 2004-05 a decrease of 4% has been noted in the total number of cosmetic procedures. Surgical procedures have shown an increase of 1%, while non surgical a decrease of 4%.

Top 5 Surgical Procedures:

  • Lipoplasty/ liposuction, down 5% form the previous year, but 21% of procedures performed were by ultrasound- assisted Lipoplasty (UAL).
  • Breast augmentation up 9% from 2004. With the first time differentiating between implants, 83.4% used saline vs. 16.6% opting for silicon implants.
  • Blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery) came in third, even though it was down 20% from 2004.
  • Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) increased 24% in the last year.
  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) reported an increase of 12% for 2004.

Top 5 Non-Surgical Procedures:

  • Botox injections are up from 2004 by 16%.
  • Laser hair removal is up by 11% with 1,566,909 procedures preformed.
  • Hyaluronic acids, specifically Hylaform and Restylane are up 35% from 2004.
  • Microdermabrasion is fourth although it is down 7% from last year.
  • Chemical peels came in last, with a downturn of 50% from last year.
