What are some Cosmetic Procedure Do's and Don'ts?

In an effort to defy the aging process, we research new procedures, prices and potential outcomes. At the same time we also may not be thinking practically in hopes of getting a desired objective. Surgical centers and Med - Spas have flooded the market with "revolutionary" techniques, employing a myriad of surgeons, estheticians, and nurses with experience in every area of cosmetic surgery possible. It easy to look at the bottom line as the deciding factor, but do you know what some of the things you need to be on the lookout for?

The following are some do' and don'ts for your upcoming procedure:

Do's

Do research your surgery/ procedure location carefully. Red flags include: strip mall locations, spas, salons, or people's homes. Beware of places with no on site medical staff, emergency services, or the absence of an attending physician.

Do look to see that the doctor is onsite. Most all cosmetic procedures should be done by a physician, or at the very least be overseen by an onsite physician.

Do check credentials and references. A surgical center may have an entire staff in scrubs and speaking the lingo- does that mean that the person working on you is an actual licensed professional? Inquire about backgrounds and credentials. Is your cosmetic surgery professional part of the appropriate organizations and open to discussing it with you?

Do discuss post operative pain management options. Discomfort and minimal pain are a potential side effect with cosmetic surgery. Be aware of the potential effects, and the pain factors associated with the procedure- can you deal with it?

Don'ts

Don't ever agree to have a procedure done in someone's home, hotel room, or other area that makes you uncomfortable in doing so. These are inappropriate settings for having any sort of semi medical procedure done, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Don't decide based solely on price. If you are having a procedure done that is a "deal" you may not be receiving the best treatment for yourself. Price should never be the only factor in receiving treatment.

Don't be afraid to speak up. What if something goes wrong, can they handle an emergency? Is the staff trained and equipped?

Other questions to keep in mind, and to have them mentally answered prior to making any decisions:

Is this treatment option right for me, do I know all my options?

Is this laser, device or technique appropriate for my skin type?

Has this procedure been performed before in the same manner I am having it done? Can I see before and after photographs?

Has you medical history been reviewed?

Don't be afraid to speak up or leave. Trust your instincts, it's your body and your future, make the most of it.
